The following entry in the 1900 census appears to be this same George McSwain, but he is a widow.  He is living in a household with his single daughter Nancy J, who is 50 years old, and a grandson whose mother was born in Virginia.  Note that the mother of Nancy is reported as born in North Carolina, as we expect for Lucinda from the 1860 census.  All other data for George match.  This gives us a more exact birth date in 1821.

I see that grandson John W Blanton's mother was born in Virginia. Since he has a different last name, his mother would have been a daughter of George, all of whose children I would expect to have been born in North Carolina.

The Blanton Genealogy fills in a lot of details and provides the name of the children.  The Nancy in this list matches the Nancy in the 1900 census.  Note that the genealogy provides George's middle name as Washington, which I suspected from the initial W in 1860.  There were other individuals in this clan named George Washington McSwain.  There are Georges in every generation, creating some confusion in trying to sort out records, which are notoriously vague and undetailed in the 1800s.  Several are known only by their first name, and could also have been named after the first president.

The grave registry of Beaverdam Baptist Cemetery in Shelby, North Carolina, reports George's date of death as 25 June 1900, not 1909 as the genealogies report.  A photo of his gravestone was published in 2011 clarifying clearly that the yaer of death was 1909.  This date of 1900 is reported in both the cemetery listing by W D Floyd, who has provided lists of many cemeteries in the area, and the entry on Find a Grave.

I note also that unsourced reports in genealogies of the burial of George's wife Lucinda Wright McSwain also report her buried in the Beaverdam Cemetery.  On Floyd's list for that cemetery, her name apepars only as L McSwain, with no dates.  The memorial reports the dates unreadable, and the photo later posted confirms this.  One genealogy reports, with no documentation or comment, a death date of 1 Feb 1897 for Lucinda.
