Elsie married John Wycough. Family members are unsure what happened between them, and indicate Elsie and John were divorced. They had three children, and in the 1940 census, they aer enumerated with Elsie in the home of her mother and stepfather.
"My husband's father was John Wycough. He was married to Elsie McSwain and they had Perry, Jane and Paul. ... We can't seem to figure out when they got divorced or why John is nowhere to be found in the 1940 [census?]. Hoping that family stories on your end may be able to piece some of it together. Any information you may have would be so helpful. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my message and hopefully get back with me."

In the field for marital status, the enumerator first put an M for Married, then one liine is drawn through that. Anothere symbol is written int eh top write space of the square, and looks like a &. So it is impossible to tell what was intended here.
