John Bowden Connally was one of the nation’s kingpin Democrats until he bolted his party in 1972 to take part in the re-election campaign of President Richard Nixon.  A protege of Lyndon Johnson, his career and Johnson's ran parallel courses for some 30 years.  The coalition between the two men powerfully affected Texas Politics for two decades, and dominated the natinoal scene while Johnson served inthe White House.

Connally was born Feb 27, 1917, on a small farm near Floresville, Tex.  He worked plowing peanuts and hoeing cotton.   He attended the University of Texas, where he met his future wife -- Ida Nell Brill.
