Eugene E Hawkins was enumerated in the 1940 census as a 20-year-old soldier at Ft Sill Military Base near Lawton, Oklahoma. Eugene's home address was reported Bradley, Grady County, Oklahoma, not far from Lindsay, Garvin County, Oklahoma, where Eva was from. Gene married Eva Gegory Hawkins lived later in Lawton. They married around 1940 after this census. We have not found a record for Eva in this census. She was not in her mother's household in Lindsay.

I found an entry in another genealogy for a Gene Hawkins who was married in Garvin County at the right time to match. This reports he died in California. Since this reports the address of birth as Lindsay, McClain County, Oklahoma, they may have lived on a farm north of Lindsay. The McClain County line runs east and west just at the north edge of Lindsay city limit and Garvin County line, which coincide at that point. The cemetery for Lindsay, Green Hill Cemetery, is on the north side of the road, in McClain County.

Note that the marriage date given in the genealogy does not give the wife's name. If this is the same Gene Hawkins from Lindsay area, the date would be for his marriage to Eva Gregory in Lindsay, Oklahoma. Their daughter Jean Ann was born in 1941, and they are reported to have been divorced about 1942. If that is correct, Eva would have been only 20 when they divorced.
However, I found another genelaogy with some records. The 1939 date is reported there as the date of marriage to Mary Alice Knox. A Find a Grave memorial reports the wife of this Gene Hawkins was Mary Alice Knox. So maybe there was a second Gene Hawkins. Note that the genealogy above also reports Gene as Hershel Gene. The genealogy below, and a correspodning California death record are in the name of Hershel Hawkins. Maybe Hershel and Gene are two different individials.

In April 2015, I was able to confirm that the Hershel Hawkins who died in Yucaipa, California, was from the Lindsay area, but is not our Gene. His family lived in Colbert, McClain, County, Oklahoma. But this individual was named Hershel N Hawkins. His parents were Thomas Hordley Hawkins 1878 - 1939 and Nettie Ann Dixon 1882 - 1964. Hershel is buried in Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside County, California. Hershel married Mary Alice Known in June 1939.
If this information is correct about the middle name and the wife's information, the information included in the above genealogies is for the wrong Hawkins. No independent information has been found on another Gene Hawkins that will fit what we know about Gene Hawkins who married Eva Mae Gregory in about 1840 in Lindsay. Oklahoma birth vital statistics records are not available online.
