Notes

  • In various records, Goldine's name is also spelled Goldeen and Goldean, as well as some odd ways that don't seem to represent the pronunciation, like Goldeon in her marriage record, which may be a mistranscription for Goldean.

I have been surprised to find that virtually all genealogies report her parents to be Charley Jenkins and Belle Scruggs Benson.  Some report Goldine's name as Goldine Benson, the daughter of Charles Jenkins.  If Belle Scruggs was her mother, this means she was born out of wedlock and she went by her mother's last name.

According to her memorial on Find a Grave, which has no photo of the gravestone for verification, Goldine was born 11 June 1902.  In the 1900 census, Belle Scruggs Benson is already a widow, living with her widowed mother Martha J Scruggs, and has only three children.  She did not marry Charles Jenkins until 1905, when Goldine was already 3 years old.  But the FAG memorial reports Goldean's maiden name as Benson, and reports her mother as Belle Rosella Scruggs and Charldes D Jenkins.

The 1910 census reports Goldean as 7 years old, matching her 1902 birth date.  It appears that Goldean's mother was a first wife of Charles Jenkins, whose  name we have not discovered.  In the 1910 census both Charles and Belle are reproted as in their 2nd marriage.  That census reports that Charles and Belle have been married 4 years, matching their marriage record in 1905.

The youngest of Belle's children reported in 1900 is Josie, 3 months old at census time in 1900.  It appears that Martin Benson died about 1899.  Josie was the last child of Martin Benson and Rosella Scruggs Benson.

In the 1910 census, even the Benson children of Belle are reported with the surname of Jinkins.

1910 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 22 April, St Charles, District 12, page 3A, Hse/Fam #41
Jinkins, Charly Head M W 48 Marriage 2 Married 4 yrs MS SC MS Farmer [b abt 1862]
    Jinkins, Belle Wife F W 31 Marriage 2 Married 4 yrs [mar Dec 1905] 7 children/6 living AR Unk Unk [b abt 1879]
Jinkins, Goldine Dau F W 7 Single AR AR AR [born 3 years before her father married Belle]

It seems we must posit an earlier wife to account for this report of 2 marriages.  If Goldean was born in 1902, then the first wife may have died in childbirth or some time before the December 1905 marriage to Belle.  Going by the birth of Goldine (Goldean), Charley must have married her mother about 1901 or 1902.  Charley was not married in 1900.

One kink in this theory that Goldine was a child of an earlier marriage of Charley Jenkins is that her marriage record reports her last name as Benson.  I cannot account for this entry of her name as Goldeon [sic] Benson.  Even If she was born out of wedlock, and was going by her mother's name (Benson), you would think she would start going by Jenkins after her parents married.that might mean she went by her mother's name at the time of her birth.

If the ages reported here are correct, their respective ages at the time of first marriage tell us that T L was married previously for about 7 years before he married Goldine (Goldie).

I see that in 1930 the child in the list after Barney is reported as T L Jr.  His father's name is given in various sources as Thomas Lee.  But in the 1940 census, the same child is reported as Lawrence, meaning he is Thomas Lawrence, not Thomas Lee Jr.

I found Goldine's death record in Arkansas.  I have not found a burial record, but there is a memorial on Find a Grave (no photo of the grave).

One genealogy has reported that Goldine was buried in Macedonia Cemetery at Wholly Grove, Monroe, Arkansas.  This apparently means the town of Holly Grove (confirmed by the location in the 1930 census above), and is confirmed in the Find a Grave memorial I found later.  There is a listing for this cemetery in Arkansas Gravestones, which seems to be a complete listing for this cemetery.  But there is only one name of Patterson there, one apparently unrelated Walker Albert Patterson, born in 1858 and died in 1932.

Goldean's husband moved to California after her death.  He is buried in Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California.  See the porofile in this genealogy for Thomas Lee Patterson for the details.
