Notes

  • In 1860 Joseph and Mary are in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, but note that their first son John W was born in Mississippi.  Some later censuses report him born in Alabama, some say Mississippi.  He is 6 years old here, so if he was born in Alabama they  moved to Mississippi after 1854, when John was born in Alabama.  But if the 1860 census is the correct one, they would have moved from Alabama before 1854.

    Mary J Philpot 2 F b Miss [b abt 1858]
    Samuel D Philpot 3mos M Farm Hand b Miss [b abt April 1860]

Mary, age 2 here, does not appear in the next census, so she must have died before 1870.

Their Mississippi marriage record says they were married in Alcorn County, Mississippi, so I suspect the 1860 census, and the 1880 census, which report Mississippi as John's birthplace, are correct.

Joseph's son Newton was born in Booneville, according to grandson Clarence's WWI registration.  Newton was born in January 1868, so Joseph and his family were in Prentiss County by late 1867.  In 1870 Joseph is reported married, but his wife is not in the enumeration.

The census reports J W as married, rather than widowed.

I have not found death and burial information for Joseph.  There is a census record for 1900 that matches him, with a different wife, in Gonzales, Texas.  This could be the same Joseph but there are some questions.  The birth information matches Joseph's report in 1900.  The last child, Thomas, was born in 1886, so he would be the son of the current wife, Sarah M.  But the older daughter, reported here as age 22, born in 1874, would be the daughter of Joseph's first wife Mary Bennett.  But Mary is reported in the 1880 census, and there is no Jane in that census.  The last child is Newton, 12 years old.

Further, Gonzales is way south of where we have documented other members of this Philpot famly.  They came into North Texas, then most moved into Indian Territory, while Gonzales County is in south Central Texas.  Thus this is probably the wrong Joseph W Philpot, though likely from the same clan.
