But they divorced before the 1940 census. In 1940, Bessie was reported as divorced, and was in her father's household with her three children. They were divorced sometime after James' birth in about 1835.

In reference to finding the obituary of Mary Lois Rice Rooke in The Elizabethton Star (Tennessee) newspaper, my cousin commented that her grandmother died there too:
"Could you look for my grandmother's there in Elizabethton also. She was Bessie Estelle Jones. We didn't get to go to her funeral back in 1976."
