Notes

  • This family has not been found in the 1860 or 1850 census.  This 1870 census appears to be Sarah Smith and her children, including Robert, who we find in later records.  In 1880, Sarah and Robert.  This 1870 record is in White County, and in 1880, they were in Jerusalem District of Pickens County, Georgia, where Robert is later reported.  The whole family is reported born in Georgia, and in the 1870 census, both Robert and his mother are also reported born in Georgia.

Note that James was born in Texas.  This means they moved from Georgia to Texas between October 1883 and December 1885.  Then after James' birth, they were not in Texas a whole year, before they moved back to Georgia, where Carter was born in December 1886. That is an amazing move for that time, only to return to Tennessee,

All the other children were born in Georgia.  Thus they moved into Tennessee about a year or so before this census.  They wound up back out west, in Indian Territory.

In age, David here matches Epheham of 1900.  But family genealogies identify John D as John David, with nickname Dave.  He is listed as Dave in 1920.  In 1900 John D was reported as born in 1889 and 11 years old, while David in 1910 is only 19, where we would expect John D to be 21.  No one matching John D appears in the 1910 census.  Birthdays are not very reliable in the 1900 census.

Epheham, or Ephraim, whose age reports overlap with Dave, is reported with separate details, including death in Ada.  Dave (who appears to be John David) died in Pauls Valley and is buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery.

We can tell that Berry matches James A because the birth state of both is reported as Texas.  All other children were born in Georgia, except the last child, born after they moved to Oklahoma.  The age of Robert indicates they moved there after the creation of the State of Oklahoma in December 1907.

It is not clear from this evidence whether the initial A was an error or Berry is a nickname.  Berry is often a proper given name, but is also sometimes a nickname for the popular name Greenberry.  At least one genealogy has James William Raspberry as one child, combining the two children William and James of the 1900 census.  This does not seem possible, since William and James were enumerated as two separate children in 1900.

Some other genealogies do have Berry as William's middle name.  This needs further attention, since Berry matches James here.  See notes for James W Raspberry Smith.

In the 1920 census, Robert is named Robert B instead of Robert L.
