John Isaac Butler was the child of John Butler and Mary (Hunt) Butler. His father, John Butler brought his family to Giles County from Granville Co., N.C. and settled at Aspen Hill, which at that time was the area of Tarpley Shop southward across Richland Creek including the present community known as Aspen Hill. The area extended down Highway-31 to about Conway. John Isaac Butler was the first white child born in the area of Aspen Hill and is buried in the Butler Graveyard on a hill overlooking Richland Creek. John Isaac Butler was one of a number of children of his father, John Butler and his mother Mary Butler, and all of his siblings stayed in the area except for brother Thomas, who moved to Alabama and then to Mississippi. One of Thomas's children was George W. Butler and he fought in the Civil War.
