Notes

  • I have found there are other Kiefers in Brazos County, so I expectother members of Mary Ann's family moved to Texas with the otherGerman immigrants.

Nicholas Thomas died before the 1870 census.  In 1870, Mary Ann isstill living on her land and has here youngest son Lewis N with her.

There is a Laborer in their household, a J Morris, age 50, but Icannot tell what the state or country of birth is.  It appears to bespelled Baen.  Though Morris is another name I did not know of amongGerman-speakers, this could be a mispelling of the German state ofBayern, a part of the Prussian Empire, where Mary Ann and Nicholas andmany others came from.

In the 1880 census Lewis is still single, but reported as head of thehousehold, but unmarried in 1880, with his mother Mary Ann living withhim.  They are living next door to Louis' brother Peter and his wifeLucy with their two children.

Also living with Lewis and his mother is the daughter of Lewis' sisterCatherine (Cathrine), who has apparently, along with her husbandCharles Zerbst, died before the 1880 census.
