The Madison home Montpelier, the main house, was built by James, Sr.about 1760. The land was passed down by his Grandfather, James TaylorII. Taylor staked a claim of more than 5,000 acres in 1716 as one ofGovernor Spotswood's Knights of the Golden Horseshoe, these men werethe first to explore the Virginia frontier.
