Notes
- The Greenes are associated with a town called Norton. Somegenealogies report that various Greenes are born in Norton,Northumberland, and others Norton in Southern Northhamptonshire. Ihave not been able to locate a town of Norton in Northumberland. TheNorthamptonshire Norton is located in Daventry District ofNorthamptonshire in the English Midlands, while Northumberland is anorthern border area. The full name of the town is Greene's Norton,or Greens Norton, since it has been Greene property and country sincethe 1300s. Thomas' son Thomas is interestingly reported as born inNorton, Oxfordshire, which may be a simple coincidence, or may be aconfusion of the town of Chipping Norton in western Oxfordshire withGreene's Norton.
"In medieval times, the village was known a simply 'Norton' and was aroyal domain of Edward the Confessor and later William the Conqueror. In the 14th century the whole village was sold to Sir Henry Greene fora total of 20 shillings hence the name Greene's Norton, which today isreduced to just Greens Norton."
