Notes

  • 1930 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 15 April, McDonald(Militia District 1013), District 11, page 5A, Hse #70, Fam #75,
Terry, Grover C Head M W 40  Married at age 20  GA GA GA Farmer [wouldmake birth in 1890]
Terry, Sarah A Wife F W 35  Married at age 16  GA GA GA Farm Laborer[would make birth in 1895]

The age given her would indicate birth in about 1895.  Yet a familygenealogy by Kaye Nicholson, in Ancestry World Tree(http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kaye_nicholson&id=I1255) reports an exact birthday of 22 September 1890.  This samebirthday is reported by another researcher, Richard Bates (AncestryWorld Tree(http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rbbates1302004&id=I05505).  With this birth date, she should be 39, when the April 1930census was taken.  Her 40th birthday would have been in September1930, if she was born in 1890.

Likewise Grover's birthday is reported by both researchers as 30 Sep1885, which means he should be 45, not 40.

This census reports the age a couple were when they were married(whereas some census report the number of years they have beenmarried).  Grover reports age 40 and married at age 20.  That wouldmean they have been married about 20 years.  Sarah reports age 35 andmarried at age 16.  This would also come out to being married about 19or 20 years depending on when the birthday is.

We know htaty censuses are notorious for rpeorting the wrong ages orfor varying form census to census.  The ages at marriage and theresulting marriage period reported here, however,  are consistent withthe ages given, which seems to make these ages credible.  I wouldnormally think an exact date would represent more knowledgeablesourcing.  But it appears that the birth dates of 1885 for Sarah and1890 for Grover accounts better for the known information of age 35for Sarah and 40 for Grover, which comes supposedly from the personsthemselves, lacking other info from public records.

Due to the uncertainties invovled I am leaving the exact dates givenby the two family researchers.  But I will watch for furtherinformation to clarify this anomaly.  As it stands the censuses giveus birth years of 1895 for Sarah and 1890 for Grover, while thegenealogies gives us the dates of 22 September 1890 for Sarah and 30September 1885 for Grover.
