This household is Edward Harman with his second wife Mary Francis(Frances) Thomason. Benjamin would be the first son of Edward withhis first wife Nancy Graves. The Porter genealogy reports both thesemarriages and son Benjamin as Nancy's son. That genealogy alsoreports John T Harman as the first son of Mary Frances. Why John isenumerated here with the last name of Haynes is a mystery. The nameis clearly Haynes for the second child Edward, with ditto marks forJohn's last name.
The age of the second child Edward would fit to be a second son ofEdward and Nancy. Nancy is reported to have died about 1857-8. Thiswould allow for the birth of Edward before her death. It is possiblethat she died in childbirth with Edward. However, I note that thePorter genealogy does not a report a child named Edward from eithermarriage.
Likewise, the census says this Edward Haynes was born in Arkansas.Edward and Nancy were living in Texas, and Ben was born there. MaryFrances' family was also already living in Texas. Thus it seemsunlikely that a second son would have born to Edward and Nancy inArkansas two years after the birth of Benjamin in Texas, when Nancydies in Texas a year or less afterwards. I cannot account for thisEdward Haynes.
Perhaps Mary Frances had been previously married also, and this is ason from the previous marriage. She was born in 1838, the childEdward Haynes was born 1857 (Mary would have been 19), she marriedEdward Harman in 1868 (she would have been 30).
On the other hand, the 1-year-old John clearly fits the son of Edwardand Mary Frances, John T Harman. I can only conclude that theenumerator's error here was to assign the preceding name of Haynes toJohn rather than the correct name of Harman. Few resources areavailable on the Harman family, with which to cross-check details likethis. Other details may later come to light from other sources.
The genealogy Harman Heritage has the chldiren of each wife detailedhere. This confirms, as we analyzed above, that Benjamin, reportedabove in the 1870 census, is the child of Nancy, Edward's first wife, adn reports him as her only child.
