    James was the oldest son of George & Mary Jenkins. His siblings were Washington, Nancy, Reuben, Fannie & George Henry. James served in the Confederate Army as a private/musician in Co. D, 40th Infantry, Virginia. James was well known for his fiddle playing. He married Amelia S. Sanders on January 17, 1866 in Richmond County, VA. The couple had 9 children: Altha Ella J. Oliff, William M. Jenkins, Martha Hattie J. Hynson, Mary Magnolia "Nola" J, Beasley, George Washington Jenkins, Daniel Conrad "D. C." Jenkins, Virginia Arrabella "Arrie" J. Hall, Rosa May "Rosie" J. Anthony and Dolly Lula Ray J. Cooke.
