Notes

  • Several genealogies reporting this family have the wife of Green A Owen or Owens as Mary Jane Agerton, but none have any documentation for this name.  Documentation is sparse, but the Social Security record of Green and Mary's son Luther Joe Anderson Owens reported his mother's maiden name as Mary Wallace.

U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
    Luther Joe Owens
Birth 3 May 1883 Fayetteville-Talladega Springs, Tennessee [Fayetteville]
    Father Green Owens
    Mother Mary Wallace
    SSN 422245379
Feb 1943 Name listed as LUTHER JOE OWENS

An index card from the Alabama Department of Archives and History is attached by one genealogy to the profile of Mary Jane Agerton, the wife of GreenOwen in that genealogy.  The card is from a record set described as "Card index of personal and corporate names and of subjects, ca. 1920-1960."  The name of the subject on the card is Mary Jane Owens.  But her husband is reported as Wm Owens, and concerns his estate.

The location is Bibb County, Alabama, while Green Owens and his wife Mary Ann Wallace lived in Cherokee  County early on and moved to Jefferson County, Alabama, and were living there when they died.  They are buried in nearby Blount County, Alabama.  So the husband's name is wrong, the wife's name is wrong, the location is wrong.

Even further, the date is wrong.  The probate date for May Jane Ownes' husband William was 30 April 1860.  Green Owen(s) and his wife Mary A (Wallace) lived in Jefferson County, Alabama, through the censuses of 1870 and 1880.  Mary Ann died in 1883 and Green lived until 1893.  There is no explanation or comment at all on this record, name or date to explain its strange presence on the profile of Green Owens' wife Mary Ann.
