Notes

  • Thomas Asa was known to the family as Asa.  My father (and maybe other siblings) called him "Acy."  This was also an early nickname for my grandfather Joseph Asa.  One family source records Joseph Asa's birth under the name Joseph Acy Jenkins.

    "Asa, the second child of this marriage was born on 3 November 1903 while the family was living on the farm near Bradley. Following Asa's birth, Joseph moved his family into Bradley.  He purchased a mercantile store from a Mr. Cater. During this period he sold groceries and drygoods and also served as Bradley Postmaster."

    Asa married Nova Bernice Grubbs.  The 1930 census reports they had just married that year.  Asa and Nova met and married in Fort Cobb, Caddo County, Oklahoma.  By at least 1936, Asa and Nova moved to Anadarko, where they lived the rest of their life.

    In May 2007, on a visit to Oklahoma, the following information was given to me by my cousin Asa Lee Jenkins, son of Thomas Asa Jenkins:
    ===============
    In 1936 Asa went into business with his father-in-law James Grubbs in Anadarko, Oklahoma.  They were originally in the appliance business, but after Mr. Grubbs died in 1941, Asa bought out Grubbs' share from his family.  In 1956 Asa expanded by buying a furniture store in town, which he later merged with the appliance business into one store.  Asa was in business till he retired in 1962, when he closed the business.

    Asa's son Asa Lee decided in 1962 to open his own, separate furniture business.  He was in business with this store until he retired and sold it in 1983.  After his retirement, his lawyer son, Larry Wade Jenkins, prevailed upon him to go into title work for him.

    The Social Security Death Index reports a quite different date of death from that reported by Harold Christian from family sources.  Harold reports 24 January 1966, while the SSDI says (month only) May 1969.  There is also a discrepancy in birth dates:  Christian: 3 November 1903, SSDI: 11 March 1903.

    Thomas Asa was buried in Memory Lane Cemetery in Anadarko, also referred to as the Anadarko Cemetery.  I have not been there to view the grave.  But there is a photo on the Find a Grave Memorial cited below, as well as for his wife Nova Grubbs Jenkins.  I found that for some reason, Asa and Nova are missing form the registry of that cemetery on OKGen Web. The grave has the same death date as the SSDI, but the birth date is the same as reported by Harold Christian.  (http://www.okcemeteries.net/caddo/mlane/jmlane.htm) An earlier registry that was on RootsWeb had Asa listed but not Nova.

    Updates I submitted ot Asa's memorial on Find a Grave were added in February 2015.
