Notes

  • In 1848, James married Bethire Fuller, according tthe name that appears to be inscribed on the original handwritten record.

Note that James' wife in 1850 was reported as Martha, but in all later censuses she is Bethia.  Her age matches later age reprots making birth about 1832, and the actual birth date reported in the Miller and other genealogies for Bethia as 1 May 1931.  And Martha's birth place is South Carolina, the same as Bethia's.  This name Martha may be an enumerator error.

The Miller birth date for James is the same as Bethia's, which appears to be an entry error in that genealogy.  In 1860, James is reported as age 35, or born about 1825.  Age 26 in 1850 matches that earlier date.  The memorial for James' burial in Charlottesville, Virginia, reports this birth date of 1 May 1931, but provides no photo of a gravestone.  The Miller genealogy is further discredited by reporting James died in Heard County, Georgia.

Confederate records indicate he was a resident of Heard County when he enlisted in the CSA army on 30 July 1861.  This may actually be the place of enlistment rather than the place of residence.

His FAG memorial reports he died in a Charlottesville, Virginia hospital of the measles 11 September 1861.  In the 1870 census, Bethia is the head of the family.  It is unclear when they moved to Texas.  It was after the birth of W N (1860), who matches Woodrow in the 1870 census.

We can say Bethia and the children moved after Jim's death in September 1861.  They must have moved with other families.  Cass County (called Davis County in 1870) is on the border with Louisiana, not far south of Texarkana.
