Notes

  • George Jerome Jackson is normally reported in public records simply as George.  From George's birth date we can determine that his mother is Elizabeth Jane Tate, who died in 1908.

I have not been able to find any Texas Marriage record for his first marriage to Addie Katherine Miller.  They married about 1923, based on the 1930 census report that they married when Addie was 14.  Their first child, Jewel C, was born in 1925.  In 1969, he married widow Mollie Morgan Green.  The record of this marriage is online.

I had some difficulty finding the records of George's birth and death.  Before finding the public record, I knew he had died before 1981.  In the obituary of his half-brother Jimmie Lee Jackson in 1981, George is not mentioned as a survivor.

A cousin and research partner, Wanda Cox, located the 1910 census for James Toliver Jackson and his family.  For some reason it had been hiding from me.  In that census George is 7.  So he was born in about 1902.  This census does not tell us the state in which George was born, reporting his birth place only as US, and both his parents likewise.  The 1920 census, when he was reported as 15 years old, reports he was born in Texas.  Note that they are living in Parker County in both these censuses.  But his obituary says he was born in Oklahoma.  Family researchers had thought he was born in Weatherford.

This census age information matches a listing in the Social Security Death Index for a George Jackson in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas:
    28 November 1902

On 17 April 2010, I received some family information from James Jackson, son of George Jerome Jackson, through his cousin and mine Marion Mixon.  James sent us copies of several old handwritten family records he had collected.  One of these was a list of birth dates.  George Jackson is reported as born 28 November 1902, confirming that the two official records above are for our George Jerome Jackson.

In the 1920 census, George is reported as only 15 years old, when we would expect him to be 16 in February of 1920, if born in November 1902.

The Texas Death Index reports the exact date of death:
George Jackson, Death 4 Mar 1973, Parker County

There is another George Jackson in Parker County, whom I have not identified.
George Jackson, Death 20 Jun 1983 Parker County

The Texas Birth and Death Indexes record that a child was born in 1927.  This appears to be our George and Addie, though her name is spelled Annie.  This birth date matches later information about their daughter Idella, who is reported in the 1930 census as 3 years old.  Interestingly, the next entry in the Index is the birth of an unnamed infant daughter on 25 June 1927 to a G J Jackson and Lillian Smith, also of Parker County, Texas.  I am not sure who this couple are.

Another child was born and apparently died in infancy.  There is a birth record for a child to George and Addie in 1929, which does not appear to be accounted for in the 1930 census.  The Texas birth records report the birth date of this unnamed infant as 7 July 1929.  No child of less than one year old is recorded in their household in the April 1930 census.  I have not yet found a death record for a matching infant.

Two children, a 4.5 year old and a 3 year old, are recorded in the 1930 census

The records indicate that George and Addie moved a lot in the next couple of years.  In April 1930, they are enumerated in the 1930 census in Jones County, Texas.  But in November that year they are documented in Hidalgo County, Texas, on the Mexican border in 1933.  The Texas Death Index records that a child was born and died on the same day, 5 Mar 1933, in the town of Donna.

By 1933, they are back in Parker County, where another daughter is born.

In April 2010, I received through my cousin Marion Mixon details on George Jerome Jackson's family from one of his sons, James Jackson.  James reported the birth date for another daughter named Joan, for whom I previously lacked a birth date.  James says she was born on 5 March 1933, the same as that given in the Texas Birth Index for Joy Ann. They would be twins, then, it appears.

Here is James' statement about the family.  I have decided to follow James' spelling of his brothers' and sisters' names.  Note that he indicates most of the children died at birth.  This is probably what happened to Joy, but I have not found a matching death record, as I have for several others.

    =================================

I have not found a birth record for Joan Ruby, and James does not report a sister by the name of Joy Ann.  There are other birth records unaccounted for in James' list.  Further investigation confirmed Joan's birth as the same as Joy, and I have concluded they were twins.  I have found no further information about Joy.  I learned in June 2010 that this is the date on Joan Ruby's gravestone in Denton County.  See Notes for George's daughters Joan Ruby and Joy Ann.  In the 1940 census the latter is named Jo Ann.

Notice that James Edward was born in Donna, on the Mexican border.  There is a birth record of another daughter born in 1943 in Hidalgo County, where they lived in the early 1930s.  I have not found any information to further enlightens us on the identity of this unnamed child.

Another son is born while they are living down south.  George Lee Jackson is recorded as being born in October 1944 in Hidalgo County, Texas.

    Texas Birth Index, 1903-1997
    George Lee Jackson
Birth 31 Oct 1944 Hidalgo County

With this information I have accounted for 10 of the 13 children James Edward Jackson says his mode had.  James says most were born dead.  It is possible some of the stillbirths were not recorded as births in the Texas Birth Index.

My cousin and coresearcher Marion Mixon found George's obituary in the Weatherford library in March 2010.  This obituary, published in the Weatherford Democrat, reports on his death and informs of his burial details.  The wording of the obit and the reported date of death indicates this was the Monday (5 April 1973) edition of the paper.

George's death certificate also reports he was born in Oklahoma.  I summarize the primary information from the death certificate here.  Note that the death certificate also reports George's birth date as 21 November rather than 28 November as earlier records and family records indicate.
