Notes

  • The name varied in different sections of Harold K Christian's Jenkins Family History as Amanda Lucinda or Lucinda Amanda.  In the 1910 census she is listed as Amanda L, which seems to indicate that Amanda was the first name.  In 1930 she is listed as Mandy M, which I cannot account for.  Her marriage license gives her name simply as Mandy Jenkins.

Nieces and nephews called her Aunt Mandy.  A comment by her daughter Annie Christian Tabor refers to her as Amanda Lucinda.
--  R Christian GED Notes, Cited in J  Epperson Genealogy, miscellaneous comments by Annie Christian Tabor.

In the 1860 census all children were listed by initials only; she was listed as L.  In the 1880 census she was listed simply as Lucinda.  Her nickname was "Mandy" which might indicate the primary (first?) name was Amanda.  I have noticed, however, that there is a common pattern in this Jenkins line to call children by their SECOND name, rather than the first.  Epperson Family Genealogy records her name as Lucinda Amanda.  One or two other genealogists report this name sequence.

"It is just possible that Joseph's family lived in the Atlanta, Georgia, area when William, Lide and Amanda were born. Or perhaps they had relatives living in that area during the period they were receiving the paper.  Later known as 'Bud,' William accompanied the family from Georgia to Cass County, Texas, ca 1860 [they were in the 1860 census in Cass County]"

I have not found her and father Joseph Sanford Jenkins' family in the 1870 census.  They were apparently out of the state after the death of Joseph's wife Lucinda Amanda in about 1868-69.  Perhaps they were traveling and were not recorded in the census of any state.  It appears that the family were away from Cass County for a period of about 2-3 years.  Joseph Sanford married Louisa Taylor Christian in February 1872.

In the 1880 census, with her father and step mother, she was reported under the name Lucinda.

Amanda's marriage license for marriage to William James Christian was issued on 1 November 1882, according to a transcription of the Cass County Marriage books by James Jackson (in spreadsheet format from James).

I later found the Cass County records in Ancestry.com online, reporting the issuance of the license:

    Texas Marriage Index, 1847-2002
    Cass County, Book 5, p 179
    License issued 1 Nov 1882
"Cristians [sic], W. J." "Jenkins, Amanda"

Harold Christian reports this date and reports that the marriage took place in Naples.  (Naples is just a few meters west of the Cass-Morris County line.  Dalton, where the Jenkins and Christian families lived, is about 5 miles east of Naples.)

Harold reports that on the same day in Naples, Amanda and married William James Christian and her sister Mary Lydia (or Lydie) married Thomas Jefferson Chapel.  Jimmy Epperson reports the date of the marriage as 2 November 1882, one day after the issuance of the license.

William and Mandy moved to Indian Territory about 1991, based on the birth dates reported for their children.  They are reported in Washita County of the Territory in the 1900 census.  But there are a lot of errors or discrepancies in the census, compared with other age or birthday reports.  Henry was the first child born in Indian Territory, reported here as born in May 1892.  I find it interesting that this census reports that all the children were born in Chickasaw Nation, the last in May 1898 or 1899.

But by 1900 they are west of there in neighboring Oklahoma Territory for the census.  Here she is enumerated under the name of Mandy.  Here Mandy's birth place is reproted as Mississippi, rather than Georgia in the first two censuses.  From here every census reports her birth place as Mississippi, with various birth places for her parents.

If the last child is Susan Anne (Annie), the birth date reported here is odd.  It is messy and hard to decipher.  But it could not be May 1898, which is what it initially looks like, if Robert's birthday was only 7 months before in March 1898.  Humorously, all the children are listed as farmers, also; even Susa, the baby.  In 1910  they are still in Washita County.  Both she parents are reported as born in Georgia this time and in 1920.

William died in 1924.  In 1930, Mandy is living in the household of her daughter Anna Christian Tabor and her husband Roy.  Mandy is listed with a separate family number:

This census reports again that Amanda was born in Mississippi, rather than Georgia as the earlier censuses.  It also reports Mississippi as the birth state not only for her mother, but also her father, who was born in South Carolina.

Her memorial on Find a Grave reports the birth and death dates from her gravestone as only a year.  But the year of death is 1858, while other records and family information has her death date as 31 May 1859.

    Amanda Lucinda "Mandy" Jenkins Christian
    Birth 1858 Georgia
Death Jul 1, 1948 Washita County, Oklahoma

Amanda died in Oakdale, now a ghost town near Cowden and only 2 miles north of Mountain View, Oklahoma. Her grave has only the year of birth and death; the year of birth is 1858, while family records report her birth date as 31 May 1859.

She was born in Georgia, probably in the Atlanta area, but about a year later her family was enumerated in the 1860 census in Cass County, Texas, where she grew up.

She married William James Christian 2 November 1882 at age 23 in Naples, Morris, Texas, a few miles from the family farm. Several members of the Jenkins and Christian families moved to Indian Territory and lived in various areas of what became Washita and Stephens County.

She died on 01 Jul 1948, at home in Oakdale.
