Granted previous to the first day of January, 1838

If this lottery record is for the same William W Hayes, he was only 12 years old when he won this number in the land lottery.

Most family genealogies providing a middle name have it as Wiley.  William's great granddaughter Mary Ollie Hayes Hilger, in her family story, says his name was William Wilson Hayes.

In the 1850 census all the children are listed by initials only.  This census reports William's wife Mary born in Georgia, but in 1860 the state is South Carolina, which appears to be the correct state.

All the children are reported as Male.  The child W R is reported as male, but matches the female child named Rebecca in the 1860 census.

Note that in this census all the children are reported to have been born in South Carolina.  Yet William and Mary were born in Habersham, are in Habersham at this census and later, and in other censuses all children are reported born in Georgia.

Mary Ollie provides some additional information on the names.  She names the children as :
"My Grandfather, William Wilson Hayes, settled in Georgia and married Mary Holbrooks to this union were born eleven children eight boys and three girls.  The Boys were Westberry, Albert, Chambers, Jasper, David, John, Hendrix and Newton (Dock).  The Girls were Rebecca, Marinda [Arminda] and Fanny."

This list tells us the middle names of Barret Chambers, and tells us Newton's nickname was Dock.  She appears to give the names in order of birth, but this is misleading here.  In another list, where she reports spouses and children, Mary clarifies that Jasper was the second child.  It appears he was born about 1842 or 1943.  I found Jasper and his family in Baxter County, Arkansas, where his parents had migrated.

From this list I was able to confirm that the Westbury Hayes living next door to William and Mary was their eldest son.

Two doors down from Westbury we find his brother Jasper, as William J.  His wife's name here appears to be Mary J L A Hays.  Family information reports his wife as Tennessee, and the 1880 census in Arkansas reports her as Rachael T, matching Tennessee.  Perhaps this Mary J L A is a first wife who died young.  In this census, William J is 17 and Mary is 14.

"This is the parents of Albert P Hayes and grandparents of William T Hayes that made it to Oklahoma Indian Territory by 1906 and both are buried in McGee cemetery.  William Wiley Hayes and wife Mary Rebecca Holbrook were both born in Habersham County, Georgia, moved to Baxter county, Arkansas by 1871 and to Oklahoma Indian Territory before 1906.  They had four boys enlisted in the 24th Infantry of Georgia during the Civil War and all made it but were all sick from the battles travel across country!  Two were captured by General Sherdian at Fort Royal sent to Washington Hospital, Fort Delaware prison, and Elmira prison, NY,  before they were given the oath to the Union and sent home by train.  Both were sick!  Tough life for this family but they stayed together and found peace in Arkansas & Oklahoma IT afterwards."

About 1901 William and Mary moved into Chickasaw Nation, settling in the town of McGee.  This is now a ghost town, being bypassed by the railroad.

    GHOST TOWN: McGEE INDIAN TERRITORY
    By Brawner Shi
Published in the Chronicles of Oklahoma
    By Charles W Mooney

Out of the mist and shadows of the almost forgotten past, most of the characters have been resurrected that once made up the little town of "McGee, I.T." The town was located north of Stratford, Oklahoma. Although the total population was less than one hundred within a mile radius of McGee in 1900, it was a proud town and made a gallant attempt to survive in the land of the Chicksaw Nation. It might have been alive today with its roots deep in the rich black soil of present Garvin Co. if some railroad agents had not demanded the payment of $3,000. from the storekeepers of McGee for the railroad line to come through town.> Today McGee is a ghost town, surviving only in memory without a single reminder to give evidence of its existence, except the mute witness of theold McGee Cemetery at the southeast edge of the place where the town once thrived.

William Wallace "Wally" McGee was the towns founder and namesake, not "Walter McGee" which has been eroneously quoted. He first came here as a lad of 18 back in 1885 when he trapped for a living in Indian Territory. In 1891 he opened the first business in the then embryo town, his blacksmith shop adjoining his log cabin home. He had learned his trade before coming to the wind swept prairies of Oklahoma. Wally McGee was a tall, thin, clean shaven white man, and was married and had two children. Soon after he opened his blacksmith shop in 1891, W.J. Long built the first store in town, about 150 yards south of the McGee house and blacksmith shop. The new store had a big sign on the front: "W.J.Long-Dry Goods Groceries, Provisions". Long sold the "Springfield" make of wagons, and had one pound cans of Black Beauty brand axle grease for sale. Early in 1892 Wally McGee expanded his business interests by opening a sawmill, and soon afterward, he built the first cotton gin in McGee. He operated both from a nearby pond formed from rains during the year. After several seasons, Mr. W.W. McGee moved to Avoca in Pottawatomie Co., two miles north of present Asher where his brother Tom McGee operated a cotton gin.

The third business in the town of McGee was a post office, which had opened on Apr. 15, 1891. It was located in the rear of W.J. Long's store, with Joe Moad (not William G. Mood) as postmaster. Joe's left hand was amputated at the wrist. He would "bunch" the letters in the crook of his left elbow, then thumb through, sort, and alphebetized them with his good right hand. Joe Moad was killed in 1897, by unknown outlaws who shot at him through the back door of the store while attempting to burglarize the place.
