Notes

  • Our family had only the name Tripann Mullins, no other name that might be a maiden name.  No maiden name is given in the other sources I have seen.

Her name is written Trip Ann in the 1870 (Georgia) and 1880 (Texas) censuses.  Her great-grandson Mike Taylor also reports that the name is written as Trip Ann on her gravestone, which I have not seen myself.  Her marriage registry entry has the name spelled as Tripann.

Mike indicates that it seems likely her name is Tripann Velma.  He reports that he has seen several documents she signed as T V Mullins.  One of his aunts reported that her middle name was Velma.  This is interesting in light of the census entry of 1860 which has her name as Trapan [sic] A.

In the 1850 census in Gilmer County, Georgia, she was listed as Tripand.

In 1860 she appears as Trapan A.  This latter entry is notable, since it gives another initial A for a second name in addition to Tripann, in contrast to the two sources that indicate Trip and Anna separate names.

Her name appears as a single name in a form similar to Tripann consistently enough to lend weight to the idea that Tripann's "official" name was one name rather than two, though it was found on her grave as two names.   Also note that in 1960 she is reported born in Georgia, while in 1850 place of birth was South Carolina, like the other chldren.

In 1870, we find Trip Ann as the second daughter of Benjamin and Frances (Francis) West in Pickens County, Georgia, with a Jasper P O address.

Tripann married Sanford Giffin Mullins in 1871 in Pickens County, Georgia.

By 1880, Gif and Tripann have 4 children, and they have moved to Bosque County, Texas.  Their parents have also moved with them.  Gif's paretns are living in the same household with them, and her father Benjamin, her sister Elmina and her son John live nearby in one household.

The anonymous Ancestry World Tree source misspells her husband's name as Griffin, but otherwise it provides excellent detail and a list of all the children.  The marriage registry entry of their marriage has Giffin as Giffen.  All the family sources spell it Giffin, or have the nickname Gif or Giff.

Since their oldest child is reported as age 9 in 1880, it appears that Gif and Tripann married in 1870, after the census.  They appear to have moved to Texas in about 1876.  One child was born in 1875 in Georgia and the next in 1877 in Texas.
