Notes

  • Some genealogies have Evaline's name as Susan Evaline.  I have not found any record, documentation or statement of family source for the name Susan.  The first record I find for Evaline Barnett is the 1850 census.

Evaline's age in the 1850 and 1880 censuses are consistent, making her born in 1838.  But her birthday from family sources is 20 November 1835. The 1895 Kansas State Census matches her actual birthday.

The child Lula is reported under this name in genealogies as well as records.  One Barnett researcher with whom I have worked on this family reports her name as Lola.  I note that her brother Frank (Francis) had a daughter who was reported in the census as Lolo, possibly meant to be Lola.  In 1900 Lula is still in the household, but has recently married David Lundry.

Thanks to Barnett Researcher Nadene Snyder, who worked with me on much of this Barnett line, and who had found many public records on the Barnett lineage.  Note that in these later censuses her name is spelled Eveline.  This was also the spelling on her marriage registration.  Nadene lists Evaline as Susan Evaline, but provides no record with that name.  I have not found any record documenting the first name of Susan.  It may be a name known only in family sources.

I have not learned if the name appears this way in a family Bible or other family document.  No one who has her name as Susan Evaline documents where they got that name.  Thus I have insufficient evidence for including Susan in the name for Evaline.

In 1920 Evaline is living with her widowed daughter Lula Belle

On her death certificate, her name is spelled Eveline, as it was on a couple of censuses and her marriage record.

    Eveline Dixon, Kinsley, Kansas
    White Female, Widowed
    Died 9 Nov 1929
Cause of Death Senility and Cancer on leg
    Name of Father Frank Barnett
Birth 22 Dec 1835 South Carolina
Informant Mrs Frank Dixon (daughter Lula Belle)
    Buried 10 Nov 1929 Brown's Grove Cemetery

I am puzzled by the name of her father reported here, Frank Barnett.  Her father was Jorile/Jorial Barnett.  I am thinking this is an error by the coroner.  The informant's husband was named Frank, a possible source of the confusion of names.

Two versions of her obituary were published by two different publications.

    Obituary of MRS. A. DIXON

    Mrs. A. Dixon

The death of Mrs. A. Dixon occurred in Kinsley Saturday, November 9th, and burial was in Brown’s Grove cemetery Sunday, November 10th. Mrs. Dixon lived for many years southwest of Burdett and will be remembered by the older settlers. At the time of her death she was past ninety-four years of age. For the past several years Mrs. Dixon had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lundry in Kinsley, and it was at her home that she died. She was buried by the side of her husband, who died several years ago. Sympathy is extended to the family.

Mrs. Jeff Hays and Curt Dixon came from Charleston and Gladys Dixon from Garden (City) for the funeral of Grandma Dixon.

Mrs. Frank Dixon spent the most of last week in Kinsley helping care for Grandma Dixon who passed away Saturday morning after a long illness due to the infirmities of old age. Grandma was about 94 years old. She had made her home for several years in Kinsley with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Lulu Lundry. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Free Methodist Church in Kinsley conducted by the pastor and burial was in the Brown's Grove Cemetery at Burdett, by the side of her husband. The other surviving member of her family are G. W. Dixon and Frank Dixon of the neighborhood and Mrs. Jeff Hayes of Charleston besides a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
