Notes

  • In some family sources this individual is named Christopher Columbus Barnett.  Other records indicate his first name was James.  In the 1880 census, he is named Christopher Barnet (various officials spelled the family name differently).  In 1900 his name is Christopher C Barnett.  When he enlisted in the army in 1903, the name is James C Barnette.  From all the sources, it appears he had four names, James Christopher Columbus Barnett.  His son likewise, who the family knows as James, also had three given names, the first being Ervin.

In his enlistment record from 1903, his name is James C Barnette.

U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914
    James C Barnette
Birth abt 1879 Dallas, Texas, United States
Enlisted 13 April 1903 Little Rock, Arkansas
Enlistment Age: 23 (Born abt 1880)

This military record reports he was born in Dallas, Texas.  Young County is in north Texas a couple of counties northwest of Dallas County.  Perhaps the recording as Dallas was a generalization to a well-known location by the army clerk.

Note that this army record names him as James C.  Did Christopher Columbus Barnett have an additional first name of James, after his father?  He named his son four names, Ervin James Columbus Barnett.
