Notes

  • Birth reports have the birth date of John B Barnett from 1814 to 1824.  Most census age reports would place his birth about 1822-1824.  Several genealogies report his father was one John Henry Barnett, with his mother's name unknown, and his stepmother as Mary Elizabeth Hudson.

But the date of birth of 1814 on John Henry Barnett's grave does not allow him to be the father of John B Barnett, because John B was born in 1822, when John Henry would have been only 8 years old.  And some genealogies have John B's birth date as 1813!  It appears two families have been confused.  None of those genealogies discuss or provide documentation or even acknowledge this problem.

But one genealogy I found has a credible report of parents of John B Barnett, who married Minerva Owens, John H Barnett as we expect and Elizabeth Robertson.  John is reported born in 1785 and Elizabeth in 1788.  This couple, according to this genealogy, has two children named John, a phenomenon we find frequently in families of this era and into the late 1800s.  John Miles Barnett is reported born in 1880, and John B Barnett is reported born in 1815.

Elizabeth's birth in Georgia provides a connection with John B's birthplace in Georgia.  His parents moved on to Tennessee where they died.  John B and his wife Minerva Owens moved to Mississippi, before moving on to Indian Territory.  Minerva was part Cherokee, her mother Deborah Ross reported to be a niece of Chief John Ross.

Researcher Kay Harper reports the following information on the son John B Barnett.

    ----------------------
Military: In 1836 John Barnett served as substitute for his brother, William R. Barnett in the "Seminolian Florida War."

Also he enlisted at Fort Payne, Alabama as private in the Alabama Volunteers on 12 Mar 1838 in the Indian Wars, was discharged 22 July 1838 at Fort Payne. This information comes from the form "Declaration of Survivor for Pension, Indian War Service Pension" filed by John B. Barnett on 12 Aug 1892, a resident of Marietta in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, Ok.

Personal History: According to military pension records, the Barnett family lived in Cedar Bluff, Al; Carrollville, Ms; Baldwin, Ms; Graham, Tx; Arnoldville, Ok; Sivells Bend, Tx and Marietta, Ok.
    --  Kay Harper, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=katty&id=I16762
    ----------------------

The 1824 birth date would make this impossible, because he would have been 12 or less when he went to the war.  This favors the birth date of 1814.  If he was born in 1814, he would have been 22 years old in 1836.  Other factors put the weight of likelihood on the 1814 date.  The birth location varies as well as the date, which seems to indicate some confusion of individuals with the same name.  The earlier date is associated with DeKalb County, Georgia.

But the early date, and even the 1824 date is too early for his purported father's birth date, reported by a family genealogy (see below) as 14 August 1813.  But John was married in 1841, so it could not have been much later than 1822-1824.  If 1824, he would have been about 17 in 1841.  Another problem is that their first daughter Caroline is reported to have been born in 1838, three years before the marriage of her parents!

Also in regard to the information in petitions for the pension, Susan Ball reports from her research:
"In affidavits filed in pursuit of this pension, John B. Barnett states that he is called John B. to distinguish himself from his father, John.  John B. Barnett further states that he was born in Morgan County, Georgia, moved to Cherokee County, Alabama (prior to 1838) and moved to Mississippi about 1844."
--  Susan Ball, RootsWeb Lists, http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/TXMILAM/2007-05/1179752184

This statement by John about the year they moved to Mississippi is consistent with the ages of the children reported in the 1850 census.  Some genealogies provide more detail about his parents and family.  This genealogy has only one wife for John B's father, John H Barnett, named Mary Elizabeth Hudson.  But this is not John's mother.  Mary Elizabeth was born in 1920, and married John Henry Barnett in 1838, while John B himself married in 1841.

But notice also that John Henry Barnett, who is supposed to be John B's father, is here reported to have been born in 1813, only a year or two before John B himself!  While other sources report that John B Barnett's father was John H, the information reported here cannot be for that John H.  These appear to be the parents of John Wesley Barnett, born in Alabama.  Despite its errors, this genealogy does have one child left out by some other genealogies.  The child named Mandaray here appears to represent Amanda.

The census month in 1850 was November, which meant most of the children had already had their birthday for that year.  The census month in 1860 was June.  The age of the oldest child, Caroline, places her birth before the marriage of John and Minerva in 1841.  Are the age reports that much off?

1850 Federal Census, Itawamba County, Mississippi, 2 November, District 6, page 133 (scan 368), Hse #904, Fam #911
John Barnett 28 M Farmer  Georgia [born abt 1822]
Minerva Barnett 26 F South Carolina [born abt 1824]
Caroline  Barnett 12 F Alabama [born abt 1838]
    Louisa J Barnett 9 F Alabama [born abt 1841]
Elizabeth Barnett 7 F Alabama [born abt 1843]
    Lucinda K Barnett 5 F Mississippi [born abt 1845]
Frances Barnett 4 F Mississippi [born abt 1846]
    John F Barnett 1 M Mississippi [born abt 1849]

Child Lucinda is given the middle initial of K.  In the next census she is Lucinda C.  The likely name with these two initials is Catherine/Katherine.  I also found that Kay Harper has the middle name as Catherine, so I am spelling the name that way, following the 1860 census.

We can tell from this census that John and Minerva married in Alabama, as their first three children were born there.  The oldest, Caroline appears to have been born in 1838, so they would have been married about a year earlier.  But a date in 1841 is reported by some sources.  The year of Caroline's birth matches the year that John enlisted in the Alabama Volunteers, so this also supports a date of at least 1837 in Alabama.  It could have been earlier.

Following John's enlistment information and the 1850 census, we will say that the family moved into Mississippi about 1844.  The problem with this is that both 1860 and 1870 censuses report that Sarah Elizabeth was born in Alabama in 1846.  The 1859 census has earlier birth dates with older ages than either of these censuses.  So if Sarah Elizabeth was born in Alabama in 1843, as the 1850 census says, or even 1844, they could have moved to Mississippi as early as 1843-44.  People did not keep as close track and as specific details on ages and births back then.

The 1860 census reports John and Minerva's children as younger and thus born later than indicated by the 1850 census.  In the 1850 census, the age of Elizabeth is 7, which indicates a birth of about 1843 in Alabama.  But in 1860 her age is 14 (only 7 years gained in the 10-year period!), which would make it appear she was born in 1846 in Alabama.  If John was right about moving to Mississippi in 1844, then the ages in the census of 1850 are closer.  And in general we would expect the children's age reports to be more accurate at a younger age.  There is an obvious difference between a 4 year old and a 7 year old!  Surely in 1850 her parents would not report her to be 7 years old when she is 4!

    Barnett, Susan A 3 F Mississippi [born abt 1857]
Barnett, Manday [Mandy] 1 M Mississippi [born abt 1859]

Sarah E matches Elizabeth in 1850 and 1870.

John and Minerva switched birth years with the ages given in this census.  I surmised that Louisa J was probably Louisa Jane.  Kay Harper's Barnett genealogy indeed reports that as her full name.  Larry Kingsley also has this name in his genealogy that includes the Barnett family.

By 1870, they are in Prentiss County, Mississippi, near Booneville.  The 1870 census gives us a birth year of 1848 for Lucinda Catherine, but her 1850 age yields a birth year of 1845.  They added 3 years to Lucinda, not to mention that the census was earlier in 1870, and she might not have had her birthday yet.  The same thing happened to Sarah Elizabeth.

    Barnett, Mary E 10 F W Mississippi [born bet June-Dec 1860]

If the ages are right in this census (and we see that is not likely), they lived in Mississippi until after 1870.  I cannot tell when they moved form Gun Town to Booneville.  But this might just be an indication of name changes or redistricting within Itawamba County.

We find here in the ages of for John and Minerva one of those wondrous errors in census ages.  Note that in 1860 John is 36 (thus born abt 1824) and Minerva is 38 (thus born abt 1822).  The children's ages are about 10 years greater in the 1870 census, but John ages 19 years and Minerva ages 15 in that period from June 1860 to June 1870!

In 1870 John's age is reported as 55 (thus born about 1815) and Minerva (Manerva) 53 (thus born about 1817).  Also in this great span of years, in 1860 Minerva is two years OLDER than John, but in 1870, she is two years YOUNGER.

Minerva's place of birth has also changed from South Carolina to Georgia, probably in the enumerator's inattention, copying the birth state of her husband as a ditto for Minerva (Manerva).

Elizabeth of 1850 was Sarah E in 1860, and has become Elizabeth again in 1870.  The child Lee M in 1860 matches Peter M in 1870.  Was he Peter Lee M?  Or Lee Peter M?

I note here that the age for Susan matches a birth year of 1856, but in the 1900 census, the birth date is reported as August 1858.  In 1860 her age of 3 would yield a birth year of 1858, for an August birthday.

The first daughter Louisa J is now out of the household.  Two other daughters are also now and apparently married; Lucinda and Francis (Frances).

Mary E and Amos were born since the 1860 census.  Since Mary is 10 years old, we may suppose that she was born between the June 1860 census and December of 1860.

Living a few houses away in 1870 was the Gooch family, whose son Jesse A Gooch would marry John's daughter Amanda about 1877.

A Barnett family genealogy by Kay Harper lists the children of this family, which I will not include in my primary entries:
    1. Frances BARNETT b: 1849

There is a child of this family missing from Kay's and another Barnett genealogy I found.  She is listed in two censuses I have found.  She is Amanda, age 12 in 1870, and reported as Manday (for Mandy), age 1, in 1860.  Larry Kingsley includes Amanda in his genealogy of several families that includes this Barnett family.
    --  Larry Kingsley, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=ldkingsley&id=I02794

Some genealogies have one child as Susan Amanda.  Susan always appears in censuses as Susan A, but I have never seen the name Amanda in any records, only in genealogies, without any source or documentation.  Since there was a younger child, Mandy, a standard nickname for Amanda, it seems certain that Amanda was a younger daughter of this family, not the same child as Susan A.

John and Minerva moved to Texas in the 1870s.  Their son James C is living next to them in the 1880 census in Young County, Texas.  James and his wife have one son, 1-year-old Christopher.  Christopher is reported as 1 year old and born in Texas.  I have not identified the ward William Hays.

According to Barnett family genealogies, John died 14 February 1897.  Kay Harper gives his place of death as Orinne, Love County, Oklahoma.  This is helpful, and confirms the exact location, but is an anachronism.  This was Chickasaw Nation until 1907, when Chickasaw was combined with other Nations and the Oklahoma Territory farther west and north to form the State of Oklahoma.

Larry Kingsley says John's place of death is Arnoldville, near Orinne.  He also reports burial in Arnoldville.  Because of this additional detail and the burial information, I am following Larry on this.  Notes on the communities and cemeteries is also included in John's extensive memorial on Find a Grave.  Arnodville and Orinne were close to each other.

In the 1900 census, we find Minerva living in Chickasaw Nation, the part that became Love County, with her son James and his wife Christina.  There are 4 men living with them as boarders.  James is listed as a farmer, and his son Christopher is working on the farm.  His biosgraphy ion Find a Grave incldes his obituary which reports he movd to the Territory 15 years before his death, which would be about 1882.

Note that child number 2 in Kay Harper's genealogy has three given names:  Mary Nancy Ellen.  This is the only place I have seen the name Nancy for this daughter.  Two other genealogies have her as Mary Ellen.  All three give Mollie as her nickname, a common nickname for Mary in the 1800s.

The genealogy by Larry Kingsley joins Kay Harper in giving the middle name of Lucinda:  Lucinda Catherine.  Kay Harper gives her nickname as Katie.  Larry gives the nickname Bette for Sarah Elizabeth.
