    Mary Ellen was born Mary Ellen Lewin to John W. Lewin and Eliza Gumb in Woodstock, Carleton, New Brunswick,Canada.

    She had 4 known brothers: John W. Lewin, Charles A. Lewin, Henry J. Lewin (Llewellyn), and James S. Lewin (Llewellyn) and 2 sisters: Charlotte Ann Lewin (Llewellyn) Boyd and Eliza J. Lewin.

    Mary Ellen immigrated from Canada to Maine about 1871 and was using the name Llewellyn when she married Edward C. Sargent in 1873.

    Her oldest brothers, John and Charles, remained in Canada and kept the Lewin name.
