Notes

  • There are discrepancies in sources as to the middle name of John Jenkins.  Harold K Christian finds family information seeming to indicate that the son born at that date had a middle initial C, and some corollary information that the full name might have been Cullen.  In the 1860 census, however, he is reported as J W.

"One should note that the oldest known son of the family was named John "Cull" (Cullen?) Jenkins ....  The second child in the enumeration was identified by the initials "J C", age 10 (born about 1850, a male, with "Miss" listed as his place of birth. He is believed to be Joseph's oldest son, John C. (possibly "Cull" or Cullen)."
    --  Harold K Christian, Jenkins Journal, Jan 1982, p2, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf

See the census transcription below.  The child is actually listed as J W. The initials J C appear to be from family sources, representing John Cullen.  JC had a son also named the same, called Cull.  The nickname Cull seems to be used at times for both father and son.  The Cass County descendants know the son as Cull.

In May 2009 I found confirmation that the correct name was indeed John Cullen Jenkins. Dorothy Wommack McNeely, a descendant of Cull, had organized much information on Cull's family and descendants.

The 1860 census reports him as J W.  This may be an error on the part of the census taker.  It is possible that the initial W for John was confused there and in some sources other with the next-born son William, whose middle initial also varies in sources.

In the 1860 census, the son listed as J W should have been J C, being named John Cullen, documented in family records and memory and other records.  J C was reported on tax rolls in 1873 and 1874, as well as later.  He is listed on the same page with his father J S and another Jenkins named John, who has not been identified.

Most of the 1890 federal census was destroyed in a fire.  The 1890 Cass County tax rolls report John Cullen and his younger brother Joseph Asa and their father Joseph Sanford, all with only initials, on the same page.  About 1890 is when J A and JS moved to Chickasaw Nation.  JA reported in a 1952 television interview that he had been in Oklahoma (Indian Territory) since 1890.  No word is mentioned about Louisa in the memories of this move, and the few statements we have from Joseph Asa himself make no mention of his stepmother in reference to that move.

In the 1910 census, JC's birth state is different from previous censuses, as reported by his son (or understood by the enumerator).  This census reports that J Stewart's father (JC) was born in Georgia, instead of Mississippi.  Also the birthplace of JC's wife Julia is Alabama instead of Georgia as in family sources and earlier censuses.

Cass County family sources spell Stewart's name as Stuart.

Debra Growe posted some comments on a photo of John Cullen and Julia's family that mention names I am not familiar with in this family.  She mentions a Thomas Jenkins and his sons John and Thomas C.  She mentions a John Jenkins who she thought was Thomas' brother.  She refers to her granddad, and finally does identify him as Stephen Wadell Jenkins,  Thomas' father is not mentioned.   She mentions no location, so it is not clear how these individuals might be related to John Cullen Jenkins' family.  None of the names she mentions are known in the family of Joseph Sanford Jenkins.

The little boy in the front of the picture:  That looks like my Granddad.  I believe that John Jenkins was Thomas C Jenkins' brother and Thomas's son (whom I believe is the little boy) was Stephen Wadell Jenkins.  My granddad's dad, Thomas was killed in the saw mill on Dec 15, 1925 when my granddad was 5 and he had told me that he was raised by his other family and older siblings.  Anyway if you could shed more light on any of this I would appreciate it.  I also have some photos of my granddad's son Larry and it is spooky how much this picture looks like the ones I have of Larry Jenkins.

    Thanks, Debra
